Abstract

This paper deals with examining the influence of religious motives on creation of two most famous William Blake’s poems: The Lamb, from Songs of Innocence and its contarary pair The Tiger, from Songs of Experience. The research offers the answer to the question how much and in which way Blake’s religious beliefs, especially in a term of contraries, influenced creation not only of these two poems, but Blake’s poetic figure as well. The contrast has been examined through religious believes, biblical motives, spiritual and material existence, as well as through magic and misticism. Through the research of the poem Lamb and her contrary pair Tyger, we came to the conclusion that the unity of contraries: innocence and experience, good and evil, light and darkness, is a main concern of Willam Blake and the essence of his mythical-mystical-symbolical poetry and his life philosophy.
